Movie Summary

Director:
Mary Haverstick
Released:
2008
Rating:
PG-13
Home is a stirring drama centered around a poet whose emotional well being becomes increasingly jeopardized as issues in her personal life suddenly culminate at an alarming rate. This 2008 independent flick was directed by Mary Haverstick and stars Marcia Gay Harden (Into the Wild, Mystic River, Miller's Crossing). Inga (Harden) reminisces on her childhood as she approaches middle age and watches her own children grow into young adults. She hopes to buy and refurbish a house which reminds her of her younger days, but there are many obstacles which stand in her way. For one, her relationship with her workaholic husband is on the rocks - she can't seem to escape fantasies of leaving him for good. She also deals with an ongoing battle with breast cancer, and if both of those aren't enough, she also struggles with an obscure family secret. Inga unfortunately more often turns to alcohol than poetry as an outlet. Her faith in a pleasant future begins to wane as she grows more dissatisfied with her current affairs. Home is a touching drama that hits the right chords: it touches your soul and your sense of empathy for others without coming off as something you'd find on Lifetime. Two thumbs up.moreless
