Honor Thy Father is a television movie about the rise and fall of the Bonnano crime family in New York City. Produced at the same time as the first two Godfather films, this television film is an excellent telling of a true mob story. Based on Gay Talese's bestselling book also called Honor Thy Father, the film follows Salvatore "Bill" Bonnano (Joseph Bologna) as he fights for the leadership of his crime family after his father's death. The film opens in 1964 as Joseph "Joe Bananas" Bonnano is kidnapped and killed. Leadership of the Bonnano crime family was up for grabs. The film portrays the violence and turmoil encountered by Bill as he asserts his leadership and attempts to consolidate his power within the family. Perhaps most interestingly, the film considers how Bill Bonnano was a regular guy whose father happened to be a mafia don, taking the audience deep into his thoughts and motives.
