Movie Summary

Director:
Deborah Kampmeier
Released:
2007
Rating:
R
Hounddog is a dark 2007 drama about a lonely girl coming of age in rural Alabama in the 1950s. Lewellen (Dakota Fanning) lives with her harshly religious grandmother, Grammie (Piper Laurie), because her neglectful Daddy (David Morse) wants to live alone in a nearby shack where he can entertain women and drink. Despite her bleak existence, she finds comfort in the music of Elvis Presley and the friendship of Charles (Afemo Omilami), an African-American horse trainer who lives nearby. Lewellen loves to sing "Hound Dog" and other Elvis songs, so when Presley announces a concert in town she is desperate to see it. Her friend, Buddy (Cody Hanford), introduces Lewellen to Wooden's Boy (Christoph Sanders), a teenage delivery boy, who claims he'll give her a ticket if she will meet him at a shack and perform a song. Rather than get the ticket, she is brutally violated with no one to help her.

Metacritic Score

  • 40

The New York Times Jeannette Catsoulis

Hounddog is never more than a sluggish dawdle from shack to swimmin' hole and back again.

  • 30

    Variety Todd McCarthy

An indigestible gumbo of Southern Gothic ingredients seasoned with snake oil, biblical hash and thoroughly unpalatable spice.

  • 10

    Los Angeles Times

The problems that plague the movie land squarely with the writer, director and producer, Deborah Kampmeier, who has crafted a howler of a bad script, shows little affinity for work...
