Michael slowly begins to heal and adapt to his new family dynamic and new town. Ruth worries about Sally, who seems to withdraw further from her and Michael and unwilling to try and adapt to the new situation. When Ruth cannot seem to connect to her daughter at all anymore, she decides to enlist the help of Jake Beerlander (Tommy Lee Jones), a child expert. Jake attempts to help Sally heal through traditional methods, but Ruth worries it is not enough.
