House of Sand and Fog is a moody, dramatic tale based on the Andre Dubus III novel of the same name. Kathy (Jennifer Connelly) inherited a beautiful coastal home from her father, but following a painful divorce, she fails to notice that the home has been seized for foreclosure due to a bureaucratic error. Behrani (Ben Kingsley), a former Iranian air force colonel, purchases the home at auction and believes he has secured the American dream for his family. Both Kathy and Behrani believe they are the rightful owner of the property, and the conflict begins to escalate when a police officer, Lester (Ron Eldard), takes Kathy's side in the conflict. Director Vadim Perelman ("The Life Before Her Eyes") creates a tense and appropriately murky atmosphere of the spiraling situation, where neither is right or wrong. Powerful performances, a subtle script, and sharp directing elevate the story to an American tragedy.
