How I Won the War is a 1967 war movie about Officer Earnest Goodbody (Michael Crawford) and soldiers Gripweed (John Lennon) and Clapper (Roy Kinnear). Goodbody is an inept, relentless leader who takes little responsibility for his men. Throughout the movie, Gripweed, Clapper, and the rest of the unit end up trying to remove Goodbody from his position, either by scaring him away or simply killing the man. Full of bizarre situations, slapstick humor, and authentic newsreel footage, the film shows German soldiers capture Goodbody's army, only to see his men killed off one by one or desert the failing unit, mainly due to his stupidity. Will anyone survive with this awful officer in command? The film uses flashbacks from what Goodbody remembers to recount the ridiculous adventures. Directed by Richard Lester, How I Won the War is a black comedy film full of ridiculous situations full of misfortune and bad luck.
