Hustle & Flow is an independent drama film made by Craig Brewer (Black Snake Moan), released in 2005. The story follows a 40-something-year-old hustler named DJay (Terrence Howard). He is a self-made pimp and drug dealer and solicits his business on the streets with his primary prostitute, or, "primary investor" named Nola (Taryn Manning). Both DJay and Nola have grown tired and weary in their line of business; however, neither one knows what to turn to next. DJay rediscovers his passion for music, something he always wanted to commit to as a kid, after he is given a keyboard. He meets a sound technician named Key (Anthony Anderson) and the duo try writing hip hop songs. It is clear that DJay's real passion is writing lyrics. DJay has some hits, but finds himself in difficult situations on his path to success. Luckily, he has Nola who keeps him sane through it all. Watch this movie to find out if DJay will make it as a hip-hop artist from the streets!moreless

Metacritic Score

  • 80

    Los Angeles Times Kevin Thomas

Unfolds in the satisfying fashion of classic Hollywood movies that strike a balance between grit and heart.

  • 70

    Variety Todd McCarthy

Director Craig Brewer has given his second feature film a vibrant pulse amplified by an outstanding cast led by Terrence Howard.

  • 50

The New York Times Dana Stevens

This disdain for women is not incidental to the film; it is integral to the fantasy Mr. Brewer is selling, which is that pimping is not as hard as it looks.
