I am David is a 2003 drama directed by Paul Feig and based on the novel written by Anne Holm, which tells the sentimental story of a 12-year-old boy who managed to escape from the inhumane and cruel regime of a Communist labor camp. David (Ben Tibber) spent all his life in a political labor camp in Bulgaria, separated from his mother and with no other relatives to rely on. One of his closest friends in the camp is Johannes (Jim Caviezel), who is eager to help him escape from this dark place and reunite with his mother (Maria Bonnevie). Johannes motivates David by telling him that he is to deliver a secret letter with important information to a person in Denmark, putting a great emphasis on the importance of his mission. Without knowing that the receiver of the letter is his mother, David agrees to accomplish the task. During the escape attempt Johannes is killed, but David is helped by a guard who gives him a compass and a few basic tools. The boy begins a dangerous journey that involves meeting different people, not all of them trustworthy and sincere.moreless
