I Cover the Waterfront (1933) is a drama based on the 1932 novel of the same name by Max Miller. Reporter H. Joseph 'Joe' Miller (Ben Lyon) is growing weary of reporting on the news stories of the San Diego waterfront, and he would rather be working for an exciting newspaper in a larger city. He thinks that his ticket to fame and fortune is writing an exclusive report on Captain Eli Kirk (Ernest Torrence), a fisherman whom Joe suspects is smuggling illegal Chinese immigrants in through the local port. Since Joe is not having any luck catching Captain Kirk, he attempts to do another story about a beautiful woman who people have seen swimming nude in the ocean. He soon discovers that the woman is Julie (Claudette Colbert), the daughter of Captain Kirk. Joe forms a relationship with Julie in order to find out more information about her father's illegal activities. However, he soon finds that his plans to bring the fisherman to justice are complicated by the romantic feelings that he has for Julie.moreless
