Igby Goes Down is a 2002 comedy-drama from writer-director Burr Steers that stars Kieran Culkin, Claire Danes, Jeff Goldblum, Bill Pullman, and Susan Sarandon in a story about a privileged young man who is at odds with his wealthy family of New York socialites and desperately trying to escape the life he was born into. Culkin stars as Igby Slocumb, a teenager who approaches his life from a strictly sardonic and misanthropic viewpoint. As he approaches adulthood, he begins trying to find his place in the world beyond his self-obsessed absentee mother Mimi (Sarandon), his career-minded Young Republican brother Ollie (Ryan Phillippe), and the rest of his old-money family. His adventures in the real world lead him to an abusive military school, Manhattan's bohemian underground, and a job working construction for his godfather D.H. Barnes (Goldblum). Igby Goes Down is a critically-acclaimed film about one young man's journey to real life, featuring music by Travis, The Dandy Warhols, The Beta Band, and Coldplay.moreless

Young Kieran Culkin holds his own against a stellar ensemble in Igby Goes Down, a family comedy so dark it turns "The Royal Tennebaums" into latter-day Bradys.

Writer-director Steers has chosen to overload "Igby" with phony archness and forced black humor, making it not the place to look for satisfying acting.
