Il Divo is a 2008 Italian biographical drama written and directed by award-winning filmmaker Paolo Sorrentino. The story centers on Giulio Andreotti (Toni Servillo), a famous Italian political leader who has been Prime Minister of Italy seven times from 1972 to 1992. His political activity also included being a permanent member of the Italian parliament since 1946, a Defense minister, Foreign minister and President of the country. His controversial life is portrayed from different perspectives, including his alleged ties with the Mafia, which Andreotti repeatedly denies. Behind this influential man is his loving wife, Livia Danese (Anna Bonaiuto), and his devoted secretary, Vincenza Enea (Piera Degli Esposti). Although everyone in Italy knows Andreotti as a powerful and competent political figure, there still is some turmoil around his ties with the illegal underground world. In the film, prime minister Andreotti is especially troubled by the death of a prominent political leader, Aldo Moro (Paolo Graziosi), which he could have prevented. His close friendship with Vatican officials and his trial and acquittal for the murder of a journalist are also portrayed in the film.moreless

Simultaneously exhilarating and confounding, dazzling and confusing, this is filmmaking of such verve and style that you likely won't care that you can't follow it completely.
