I'm A Fool, the 1977 film adaptation of author Sherwood Anderson's short story of the same name, features Academy Award-winning actor and director Ron Howard and Academy Award-nominated actress Amy Irving in two of their younger roles. The film opens in 1919 Ohio as horse trainer and groom Andy (Ron Howard) travels from town to town trying to make a living on the county fair racing circuit. When Andy meets rich debutante Miss Lucy Wessen (Amy Irving) at the track one day, he falls in love. Worried that Lucy will not think he is good enough, Andy tells her that he is rich. Soon, he is telling lie on top of lie to keep up the charade. Lucy and Andy realize that they are madly in love; but for Andy, there is no way to tell Lucy the truth. This edition of I'm A Fool is part of the American Short Story Collection that originally aired on PBS.
