I'm Dancing As Fast As I Can is a 1982 biographical drama about the hazards of prescription drug addiction, based on the popular memoir by Barbara Gordon. Although she has succeeded as a television producer, Barbara Gordon's (Jill Clayburgh) life is slowly spinning out of control. She relies on Valium to survive the competitive, cut-throat working environment, but her addiction begins to take over her life. She hides her drug stash everywhere in her life, at home, at work, Her attorney boyfriend, Derek Bauer (Nicol Williamson), does not see her pills as a problem since he uses alcohol to cope with his problems. Barbara finally decides to go cold turkey on her own. The resulting nervous breakdown lands her in a mental hospital and her carefully constructed life in shambles. Julie Addison (Dianne Wiest), a therapist, starts working with Barbara and helps her to understand the roots of her addiction and her long journey to sobriety.
