Immediate Family is a 1989 drama directed by Jonathan Kaplan. In the film, Linda (Glenn Close) and Michael Spector (James Woods) are a happily married couple who are desperate to start a family. However, the couple's attempts to have a child of their own fail, and they learn that they cannot possibly conceive their own child. This realization devastates them temporarily, but then they decide to explore adoption. Through an adoption agency they meet a young, unmarried, simple teenager, Lucy (Mary Stuart Masterson). The couple meet with the teenager and discuss the possibility of the Spectors adopting her unborn child. The trio tentatively agree and Lucy becomes close friends with the prospective parents. The Spectors even invite her to their home so she can see first hand what they are able to provide to a child. Will Lucy make the couple's dream come true, or will she grow too attached to her unborn child to follow through?
