Immortal Beloved is a drama that details the efforts of Ludwig van Beethoven's biographer to find out the true identity of the mysterious woman referred to by Beethoven in several letters simply as "my immortal beloved." The film opens with the death of the great composer, Beethoven (Gary Oldman). Shortly thereafter, a series of long-lost letters are discovered by his assistant, Anton Felix Schindler (Jeroen Krabbe). In the letters, Schindler finds several references to an "immortal beloved", presumably a woman that Beethoven once loved. Intrigued, Schindler sets out to discover the true identity of the mysterious woman. As he sets out on his journey, the film flashes back to actual events in Beethoven's life. Schindler eventually meets several women whom he believes might be the "immortal beloved", but because the identity of the woman has never been discovered, he can only speculate on who it must be. Immortal Beloved is a fascinating insight into one of the great mysteries in the life of the man frequently considered to be the greatest composer in history.moreless
