Impromptu is a 1991 lavish period piece directed by James Lapine that portrays the historical romance between classical music composer Frederic Chopin (Hugh Grant) and Victorian author George Sand (Judy Davis). George Sand was a famous female author known for her fiery personality. She wore pants, smoked cigars and lived an unconventional life. When Sand gets the chance to hear Chopin's music, she sets her sights on a romance with him. The reserved Chopin is also pursued by Sand's friend Marie D'Agoult (Bernadette Peters). Chopin, however, wants nothing at all to do with the brass, notorious writer. When Sand discovers that Chopin will be spending the weekend at the home of a social climber, the Duchess D'Antan (Emma Thompson), she insists on spending the weekend there too, and is determined to make the shy composer her own at any cost. Watch Impromptu to see if George can ever win Chopin's heart.
