Impulse is a 1990 crime and action/adventure film that chronicles the adventures and struggles of streetwise cop Lottie Mason (Theresa Russell). Mason's job consists of posing as either a prostitute or a drug junkie to collect vital information on the inner workings of the criminal underworld. When she gets what she needs, she nabs the solicitors and criminals when they least expect it. Mason has difficulty shouldering the heavy burden of this dangerous job as financial stress is constantly floating on the edges of her mind. The film explores the duty of the individual to society in a world where everyone else refuses to abandon narcissism time and time again as Mason sinks deeper into the criminal underworld. The more of the nasty side of human existence Mason witnesses, the more she begins to understand the grim truth that choosing to be one of the "good guys" may be morally right but is definitely not the profitable decision.
