In a Lonely Place is a 1950 film noir starring Hollywood legend Humphrey Bogart as Dixon Steele as a hard-luck screenwriter whose string of failures since World War II has given him a hot temper and a surly disposition. He's known for his occasionally violent outbursts because of his failing career. Dix asks a nightclub hat-check girl to come home with him one night, after learning she's already read a book he's considering adapting into a film. His intentions seem innocent enough-he wants Mildred (Martha Stewart) to explain the plot to him so he can know if its a good project. However, the next day a police detective shows up at Dix's house. Mildred has been murdered. Dix, having seen her most recently, is a prime subject. As the investigation progresses, Dix pursues a romantic relationship with his new neighbor, Laurel Gray (Gloria Grahame). Dix gets caught in a vicious circle of implication, as the accusations against him make him more angry and violent, while his anger only makes him more suspicious in the eyes of the law. In a Lonely Place is a classic film noir that has earned a spot on both Time and Slate Magazine's lists of the 100 best films.moreless
