In America is a sentimental film about one family's unflinching determination to make life work in New York City. After the death of their eldest son Frankie, Johnny (Paddy Considine) and Sarah (Samantha Morton) decide to pack up their belongings and head to the United States with their two daughters Ariel (Emma Bolger) and Christy (Sarah Bolger). They enter the country illegally by passing through the Canadian border. Johnny hopes to make an income by pursuing an acting career. The movie, mostly told from Sarah's perspective, follows Johnny and Sarah as they struggle to provide a better life for their daughters. In America is at times comical, and during other moments, can be very moving and emotional. Writer and director Jim Sheridan amalgamated many of the experiences from his life and his daughters' lives to create this story which clearly comes from the heart. In America won Best Original Screenplay and Best Actress for Samantha Morton in 2003.
