In Love and War is a 1996 historical romance based on the early life of novelist Ernest Hemingway starring Oscar winner Sandra Bullock and Chris O'Donnell. Cub reporter Ernest Hemingway (Chris O'Donnell) may only be 18 years old, but he wants to know what the war experience feels like. In 1918, he volunteers as an ambulance driver during World War I novel and quickly learns the difference between his imagination and the gruesome reality of war. While saving a soldier, Hemingway gets shot in the leg and the doctors recommend amputating it. He insists life will not be worth living without his leg and begins a long and painful recovery under the care of Nurse Agnes Von Kurowsky (Sandra Bullock). Nicknamed Aggie, this Red Cross nurse is 26 years old but finds herself attracted to the young man. Director Richard Attenborough (Oscar winner for "Gandhi") based this romantic tale on Kurowsky's actual diaries and Hemingway's short stories about the time.
