Old California is an early B western film made in 1942. It is the story of Boston pharmacist, Tom Craig (John Wayne) who sets up his new pharmacy business in Sacramento, California. Tom gets on the wrong side of a local politician and land owner, Albert Dekker (Britt Dawson) who frames Tom by poisoning his medicines which causes the locals to distrust him. Lacey Miller (Binnie Barnes) is Britt's saloon dancing girlfriend who is secretly in love with Tom. The California gold rush begins and causes all kinds of confusion and trouble in Sacramento, the worst being a very bad outbreak of fever among the residents in a local mining camp. Tom is more than ready to come to the miner's aid and redeem himself. This is an early John Wayne film made before he was a great star, but his performance still shines. Old California is directed by William McGann.
