In Old Cheyenne traces the comedic adventures of a New York news reporter, Steve Blane (Roy Rogers), who is sent out on assignment to Cheyenne, Wyoming to investigate a series of daring robberies by an armed bandit called Arapahoe Brown (George 'Gabby' Hayes). The inhabitants of the town of Cheyenne, however, seem determined to complicate Steve's life as well as his job, and he quickly finds that his assignment may be more dangerous than just covering the theft of the town's valuables. While he searches for the truth, he also meets the sly town mayor Sam Drummond (George Rosener), who seems to have a grudge against Arapahoe Brown, and a beautiful club singer with the improbable name of Dolores Casino (Joan Woodbury). Determined to strip away Cheyenne's layers of lies and discover a real story, Steve investigates both the bandit and the town's notables in an attempt to discover the real villain.
