In Old Chicago is a 1937 American drama directed by Henry King and starring Tyrone Power, Alice Faye, Done Ameche, and Alice Brady. Based ont eh story "We the O'Learys" by Niven Busch, the film is a fictionalized account the great Chicago fire of 1871 that was supposedly started by a cow. Before the fire, however, the story shows the underbelly of Chicago, with two feuding brothers as the political powers in the city. The second half of the film is a large-scale disaster epic, with highly ambitious special effects. Jean Harlow was originally booked to play the lead role, but her untimely death forced Alice Faye to step in. At the time of its release, In Old Chicago was one of the most expensive films ever made, with a production cost of over 1.8 million dollars. In Old Chicago was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Picture, and Alice Brady won the award for Best Actress in a Supporting Role.moreless
