In the Bedroom is a dark 2001 domestic drama starring Oscar winners Sissy Spacek and Marisa Tomei. Frank Fowler (Nick Stahl) returns to his Maine home town after college to spend time with his parents, Matt (Tom Wilkinson) and Ruth Fowler (Sissy Spacek). When he begins an affair with Natalie (Marisa Tomei), Ruth, in particular, disapproves of her son getting involved with an older working class woman with two children. Ruth worries Frank will forego his future as a graduate student in architecture and begins to pressure her son to end the affair. The conflict only leads Frank to become more deeply involved with Natalie, while at the same time her estranged husband, Richard (William Mapother), also wants the relationship to end, as he still sees Natalie as his wife. Director Todd Field ("Little Children") builds towards the violent confrontation and its tragic aftermath in this sad but telling love story that received five Oscar nominations.
