Wong Kar-wai
Released:
2001
Rating:

In the Mood for Love, a 2001 drama, tells the story of an intense but platonic relationship between a man and a woman in 1960s Hong Kong. Chow Mo-wan (Tony Leung) and Su Li-zhen (Maggie Cheung) are neighbors in an apartment building. Often left alone by their spouses, Chow and Su meet each other by chance while running errands and strike up a friendship. The two eventually discover that their spouses are having an affair with each other. Determined not to repeat the shameful behavior of their partners, Chow and Su carefully avoid even the appearance of a romantic relationship. However, as their love for each other grows, Chow invites Su to leave her husband and move with him to Singapore. By the time Su makes her decision, her chance for a new life with Chow may have disappeared. In the Mood for Love won several best-picture prizes, including Best Foreign Language Film at the New York Film Critics Circle Awards.moreless

    Chicago Sun-Times Roger Ebert

The most ingenious device in the story is the way Chow and Su play-act imaginary scenes between their cheating spouses.
