In the Realms of the Unreal is a 2004 documentary about novelist Henry Darger, who is known for his 15,143 page fantasy manuscript entitled The Story of the Vivian Girls, in What is Known as the Realms of the Unreal, of the Glandeco-Angelinnian War Storm, Caused by the Child Slave Rebellion. Darger was a reclusive janitor with only three known photos of him that exist. He knew few people and spent most of his evenings working on his manuscript or working on one of several hundred watercolor paintings that also appear in the film. The film features interviews with neighbors and few other acquaintances intercut with animated versions of his story. The manuscript detailed the story of seven sisters who rebel against child-enslaving men. Narrated by Dakota Fanning, the film was nominated for the National Film Board Award for Best Documentary at the 2004 Vancouver International Film Festival.
