In the Spirit is a black comedy following the eccentric lives of a trendy New York couple. Marianne Flan (Elaine May) is forced to leave her cushy life in Beverly Hills when her husband, Roger (Peter Falk), is canned. The two move back to their hometown of New York City and hire a New Age psychic, Reva Prosky (Marlo Thomas), to renovate their apartment. When the remodel ends in disaster, Reva whisks the couple away to her home in upstate New York. Roger suddenly disappears, leaving Reva and Marianne with no other choice than to get to know one another. Marianne is initially leery of the flamboyant Reba, but when they are joined by Crystal (Jeannie Berlin), a hooker with a propensity that shocks even the jaded Roger, they head off on a series of wild adventures. Despite their radically different lifestyles, the women find they share more common ground than they would have ever guessed.
