In Transit is a provocative documentary that provides an in-depth look at the ramifications on women of years of civil unrest and war in the Eastern Congo region of Africa. Filmmakers Bent Jorgen Perlmutt, Nelson Walker III and Louis Abelman are hired by a non-profit Congolese hospital to make a series of informational videos about surgical procedures to help educate doctors and patients. They become unnerved when their assignment includes a section on a medical procedure known as vesico-vaginal fistula (VVF) repair, one of the most common operations performed at the hospital. They find out that in the first world this procedure is rare for women, and in the third world it is generally caused by birthing complications. However, in the Congo, most vaginal fistula cases are the result of violent rape. Marauding elements of rebel armies, warlords, and militias control the ethnic and racially diverse countryside and often use violent rape to intimidate the region's inhabitants. In Transit tracks the journey of several victims of violence on their road back to recovery and the continuing struggle of charities and organizations that are fighting back against the poverty, war, and hatreds that fuel this violent cycle in the Eastern Congo.moreless
