The film chronicles Conrad's rise from a cartoonist for his college newspaper to a Pulitzer Prize winning editorial cartoonist. The film focuses on Conrad's independent streak and penchant for controversy including ending up on President Nixon's "enemies list." The filmmakers demonstrate how he took aim at Democrats and Republicans alike in making his pointed commentary on the issues of the day. Perspective and context are provided by fellow cartoonists Tony Auth, Doug Marlette and Mike Keefe. Cartoon historian Stephen Hess and Conrad's former editors John Carroll and Ed Guthman also give their perspectives on his long career. In addition, the film explores his family life seeking to understand the forces that shaped his unique view of American life.
