Inglourious basterds is a movie written and directed by Quentin Tarantino set in Nazi occupied France during World War II and follows 2 groups looking to defeat Hitler and end the war at a German movie opening. The film follows two separate but connected story lines, that of Shoshanna Dreyfus and that of The Basterds. Shoshanna Dreyfus is a young Jewish girl who is the only member of her family to escape alive after a German SS Officer kills the rest of her family. She reemerges in Paris as the owner of a movie theatre, and when a Nazi officer falls for her, she is given the opportunity to host a movie premiere where the heads of the Third Reich will attend. At the same time, Lt. Aldo Raine leads a group of American Jews, nicknamed the Basterds, on a guerilla warfare mission against the Nazis in France. They're goal is simple: to kill as many Nazis as possible in the most violent and brutal manners. On news of the premiere, they too want a part of the action and seek to end the war in one night. The film was well received critically, garnering at 89% from RottenTomatoes and received a rave 4-star review from Chicago Sun-Times critic Roger Ebert. The film stars Brad Pitt, Diane Kruger, BJ Novak, Eli Roth, Mike Meyers and Christoph Waltz, who received an Academy Award for "Best Supporting Actor" for his role as Hans Landa.moreless

Mostly, though, there is Landa, whose unctuous charm, beautifully modulated by Mr. Waltz, gives this unwieldy, dragging movie a much-needed periodic jolt.
