Inserts is a 1975 drama written and directed by John Byrum. Set in the 1930s, the film centers around a formerly successful silent film director known only as "The Boy Wonder" (Richard Dreyfuss). Unable to make the transition from silent films to "talkies," the director has withdrawn himself from society in shame, living like a hermit within his spacious mansion. As his money dwindles, he decides to start filming silent pornographic films in his mansion to keep his head above water. However, he becomes increasingly despondent as the films he now makes cause him to consider his own issue of sexual impotence and, to add to his troubles, he learns that the city has plans to demolish his home to make way for a highway. When one of his starlets (Veronica Cartwright) winds up dead, he turns to an unlikely source for a replacement. In a final, desperate push, the director strives to turn a high enough profit to save both his career and his home.moreless
