Inside Mecca is the National Geographic presentation that goes inside the central city of one of the world's largest faith groups. Each year, millions of Muslims take the hajj, a pilgrimage to Mecca. Muslims encourage one another to attempt the pilgrimage at least once in their lives as a way to honor Allah and their faith heritage. The film explores the rich heritage of the city and takes an unusual look at the non-Muslim residents of the city as well. Several individual travelers tell their stories as they journey across land and sea to reach their destination. Their stories become a microcosm of the world of faith and the longing for a connection to the divine. They prepare for the journey, struggle to reach their goal, and then revel in the unified crowds who have joined them in their quest. For those who will not make the journey but are curious, the film serves as a first-person eye-witness.
