Intimate Power is an epic adventure film released in 1989 and directed by Jack Smight. Set in the early 1800's, beautiful French school girl Sineperver (Maud Adams) is kidnapped and forced into the harem of Abdul Hamid (F. Murray Abraham), the Sultan of the Ottoman Empire. The powerful Sultan is blindsided by her beauty, and falls deeply in love with her despite her horror at the cruelty of the Turks. Soon, Sineperver is pregnant with Hamid's son. Shortly after his birth, Hamid dies, leaving behind his grieving mistress and infant son. Now, Sineperver has a chance to influence the Ottoman Empire in a way she never could while the Sultan was alive. She must work quickly to civilize the barbaric empire before her son is old enough to seize power for himself. Intimate Power is a moving drama that highlights the complexities of the exotic Ottoman Empire. This beautifully photographed film should not be missed by anyone who is fascinated by Middle Eastern history.moreless
