Into the West

Movie Summary

Mike Newell
Into the West is a 1992 adventure film directed by Mike Newell. The story revolves around a family that is struggling to cope with the death of their wife and mother while living in the projects of Dublin. The father, Papa Riley (Gabriel Byrne), is especially bitter about his lot in life and turns to alcohol instead of offering support to his two young sons, Ossie (Ciaran Fitzgerald) and Tito (Ruaidhri Conroy). Fortunately, the boys' travelling grandfather (David Kelly) arrives with an enchanting white stallion, named Tir na nOg. He gives the stallion to the boys, and having nowhere else to keep it, they are forced to house it inside their small apartment. The boys quickly bond with the mystical animal and are crestfallen when police confiscate the horse from the apartment. In an underhanded deal, the police officers sell the stallion to a greedy businessman. Determined to get Tir na nOg back, Ossie and Tito set out to rescue the horse. However, once they retrieve him, they find that the stallion has his own adventure planned for the boys.moreless

There are a few tonal glitches, but Newell's hand is remarkably sure, the actors are winning, and Into the West is a treat. [17 Sep 1993, p.54]
