Invasion of the Body Snatchers is the 1956 science fiction paranoia classic that terrified a generation, served as a potent metaphor for McCarthyism and spawned several remakes in several decades. Adapted from the novel by celebrated author Jack Finney and directed by prolific filmmaker Don Siegel (Dirty Harry, The Killers, Escape from Alcatraz), the film kicks off with hysterical G.P. Miles Bennell (Kevin McCarthy, Piranha, Twilight Zone: The Movie) being dragged kicking and screaming into the psychiatric ward of a hospital, screaming about the end of the world. He tells his story to the doctors, warning of an impending invasion of malevolent extraterrestrial plants that duplicate and replace human beings, leaving behind soulless beings that will let nothing stop them in their quest for total dominance of our planet. Bennell tells of how the infiltration began in his small hometown of Santa Mira, California - the efforts of he, his former flame Becky Driscoll and friends Jack and Teddy Belicec to combat and escape the invasion taking up most of the tale.moreless
