Ip Man, released in 2008, is the story of Ip Man, the grandmaster of the Wing Chun martial art. The semi-biographical film takes place during the Second Sino-Japanese War in the city of Foshan. Ip Man was the preeminent Wing Chun martial artist in Foshan, however he keeps mostly to himself until he defeats a highly skilled Wing Chun martial artist from the north. Despite the fame and respect this particular fight earned Ip man, his family is forced to leave his house because of the war. Starring Donnie Yen, Simon Yam, Siu-Wong Fan, Ka Tung Lam, Yu Xing, and You-Nam Wong, Ip man was both critically and commercial successful. Ip Man took home the top prize at the Hong Kong Film Festival, and because of its success a sequel was released in 2010.
