Ira & Abby is a romantic comedy directed by Robert Cary that explores monogamy, marriage, and trust. Ira Black (Chris Messina) is floundering in both his personal and his professional lives. His dissertation is unfinished, his therapist of twelve years has just dumped him as a client, and his long-term girlfriend Lea (Maddie Corman) has just dumped him as a lover. In the wake of the collapse of what little structure his life possessed, Ira decides that he needs to make serious changes in his behavior. He joins a gym and immediately takes to the gym's membership coordinator, Abby Willoughby (Jennifer Westfeldt). The two bond, and mere hours after meeting each other, Ira proposes marriage. Abby accepts, but Ira soon realizes that his new wife may have more baggage than he bargained for. The couple's fledgling marriage sends shock waves not only through Abby and Ira's lives but also through the lives of their extended families.

Metacritic Score

  • 70

The New York Times Jeannette Catsoulis

Though playing at times like an extended sitcom, Ira & Abby radiates a breathless charm, due in no small part to Ms. Westfeldt's sharp dialogue and engagingly unmannered performance.

  • 70

    Los Angeles Times Jan Stuart

This round-robin of marital malaise has a lot more integrity than one might anticipate from its meet-cute beginnings.

  • 50

    Variety

Starts off deliriously, is derailed into reality, and finally settles into something in between.
