Irma La Douce (Shirley MacLaine) is a prostitute who runs her business smoothly until no-nonsense police officer Nester Patou (Jack Lemmon) notices the brothel in the neighborhood that he is assigned to patrol. He has the brothel raided and the johns, including his superior officer, arrested. Nester finds himself in hot water and gets fired from his job. He goes back to the neighborhood and makes friends with Irma and starts to fall in love with her. Nester doesn't want to share her with anyone, so he disguises himself as a wealthy aristocrat and buys up all of Irma's time. Eventually, Nester gets jealous of the character he is portraying and devises a plan to murder Irma's best client, his own alter ego. Soon his life begins to spiral out of control when he is arrested for the murder of the wealthy aristocrat. Does Nester get out of this jam, and does he get the girl?
