Irma Vep

Movie Summary

Director:
Olivier Assayas
Released:
1996
Rating:
Not Available
Irma Vep features Hong Kong movie queen Maggie Cheung in a satire on French film and culture. At the start, the film looks like a behind the scenes story about movie making, in this case an update of the French silent classic, "Les Vampires." Along the way, however, Irma Vep morphs into a pointedly funny look at people who take their love of film to an obsession. Targets include directors, actors, overzealous crew members, and just about anyone who takes movies too seriously. Hired to play the title role of a jewel thief, Cheung finds herself costumed in skin-tight latex, coping with language barriers, and dealing with a director who is gradually losing touch with reality. For her own part, she becomes so absorbed in her role that she begins attempting robberies at her hotel. Cheung gives a praiseworthy performance, and Irma Vep received positive reviews on its release, with most critics praising its humor and the dreamlike quality of the plot.moreless
