Iron Island, a 2005 Iranian drama directed by Mohammad Rasoulof, follows the lives of a marginalized group of Arab squatters who must find some way to exist within Iran's Persian society. The group, led by the strong-willed Nemat (Ali Nasirian), subsist on a mothballed oil tanker which is slowly sinking into the Persian Gulf. They are able to make a meager living selling scrap metal, scouring the boat's tanks for left over drops of oil and fishing. Nemat rules with an iron fist, but also genuinely cares for his charges. However, his leadership is tested when the owners of the boat announce that they are going to sell the ship for scrap metal. The tension turns into a crisis when Nemat's assistant and prot''g'' Ahmed (Hossein Farzi-Zahed) announces his love for a young woman (Neda Pakdaman) who Nemat has already promised to another man. Now, Nemat must find a way to hold his people together and give them a future.
