Isabel is a psychological drama which follows the gradual breakdown of a young woman after she returns home to the family farm. Isabel (Genevieve Bujold) has a promising career in Montreal but heads to her family's homestead on the Gasp'' Peninsula when she receives news that her mother has died. After the funeral, she must stay to take care of Uncle Matthew (Gerard Parkes), who seems to live in the past and assumes that she will give up her city life to join him. Isabel explores her family's incestuous past, poring over photographs of her grandfather, who may have had an affair with her mother. Just as troubling is the strange young man who shows up on the farm one day and bears a striking resemblance to Isabel's dead brother. Confronted with her family's disturbing past and her own regrets, Isabel begins to unravel. The film was shot on the Gasp'' Peninsula in Quebec and marks the debut of director Paul Almond.moreless
