It Happened One Night follows pampered Ellie Andrews (Claudette Colbert) as she defies her father's wishes and marries fortune-hunter King Westley (Jameson Thomas). When her father (Walter Connolly) has her marriage annulled, she runs away, determined to be reunited with her husband. Through a chance encounter, she meets Peter Warne (Clark Gable), a newspaperman looking for a juicy story. He promises to help her find King if she'll give him an exclusive on her story. Otherwise, he'll turn her over to her father, who has offered a reward for her return. As they travel across the country, the two find they have growing feelings for each other. But fate has a few more challenges in store for the couple. The 1934 Columbia Pictures film was directed by Frank Capra. It won the Academy Award for Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Director, Best Picture and Best Writing for the script based on Samuel Hopkins Adams' story, Night Bus.
