Jacknife is a 1989 drama written by Stephen Metcalfe and directed by David Hugh Jones, which tells the story of two Vietnam veterans who struggle with their painful memories while trying to get back to enjoying life. Joseph "Megs" Megessey (Robert de Niro) is suffering from post-traumatic stress after fighting in Vietnam, trying to recover his psychological health. Megs plans to visit his Vietnam friend and fellow soldier, Dave (Ed Harris), who has become an alcoholic and struggles even more than Megs in his daily life. Joseph's idea is that together they can face their flashbacks and painful past more effectively. His plan, however, goes wrong when he unexpectedly falls in love with Martha (Kathy Baker), Dave's sister who lives in the same house and takes care of him. Dave has outbursts of anger and violent behavior when he finds out about their romantic relationship. Megs and Dave have to remind themselves of their strong friendship in Vietnam if they are to overcome their differences and discover a new perspective on life.moreless
