Jane Eyre is a 1996 film directed by Franco Zeffirelli. It is based on Charlotte Bront'''s dramatic and romantic book of the same name, published in 1847. The film stars Charlotte Gainsbourg, William Hurt, Joan Plowright and a young Anna Paquin. The plot centers around the life of the title character Jane Eyre, a poor and modest young woman who is hired as governess to the child of Mr. Rochester (William Hurt). A tale of suspense and romance unfolds as Jane shows courage and bravery in the face of growing revelations about the mysterious past of the Rochester family. This version of Jane Eyre was distributed by Miramax Films US, most of its location filming was conducted on site in Bakewell, Derbyshire, in the UK. It is, in general a faithful rendering of the novel with some editing for time constraints. Other cast members include: Fiona Shaw, John Wood, Geraldine Chaplin, Amanda Root and Elle Macpherson.
