Jar City is a 2006 crime thriller by director Baltasar Kormakur, based on the novel by Arnaldur Indrioason. In 1974, a young Icelandic girl was brutally raped and murdered, but the crime was never solved. Decades later, jaded detective Erlendur (Ingvar E Sigurdsson) thinks that there is a link between her murder and the homicide of a local thug, Holberg (Thorsteinn Gunnarsson). Erlendur’s work life is further complicated by his home life, where he must deal with a drug addicted pregnant daughter, Eva Lind (Agusta Eva Erlendsdottir). When he crosses paths with Orn (Atli Rafn Sigurdason), an employee at a DNA-mapping lab whose daughter died of a brain tumor, the two men’s lives begin to intersect in many unexpected ways. Jar City won five 2006 Edda Awards, a 2007 Crystal Globe Award, a 2007 Don Quijote Award, and three awards from the 2008 Valenciennes International Festival of Action and Adventure Films.
