John Carpenter's Escape From L.A. is the 1996 sequel to the cult classic Escape From New York. Written and directed by John Carpenter and once again starring Kurt Russell, this science fiction sequel finds former war hero Snake Plissken (Kurt Russell) battling his way through the deadly streets of Los Angeles. In this future world, the city of angels has become an island prison surrounded by a containment wall and watched over by armed guards. An egomaniacal President (Cliff Robertson), who thanks to the recently amended Constitution is serving a life term in office, has declared that anyone not conforming to the "Moral America" laws he has created (banning things like alcohol, tobacco, red meat, profanity, firearms, atheism and non-marital sex) will be deported to Los Angeles Island for permanent exile. Escape is considered to be impossible. Snake has recently been captured and is awaiting his own exile. Before his deportation, however, Snake is granted a meeting with the President and is offered a full pardon in exchange for capturing a weapon located in L.A. To ensure Snake's compliance, the president injects him with a toxic virus that will kill him in ten hours.
