John Carpenter's Ghosts of Mars is a futuristic thriller. This film takes you to the year 2025 when humans have the ability to survive and establish life on the planet Mars. The planet has proven conducive for mining, but it is discovered that there is more on the planet than simple resources when Lieutenant Ballard (Natasha Henstridge) ventures away from the mines to look for convict James "Desolation" Williams (Ice Cube). While on her search, the Lieutenant discovers a deserted town other than a few inhabitants. These towns people turn out to be a bigger problem than the convict, Williams, who is on the loose. It turns out that the mining excavations cause some strange things to happen to the towns people. A cast including Jason Statham, Pam Grier, and Clea Duvall join the excitement in other minor roles throughout the film to make this movie one for the history books.

Metacritic Score

  • 40

    Los Angeles Times Kevin Thomas

Carpenter's heart doesn't seem to be in this lackluster space adventure set in 2176. What's more, his stars -- Natasha Henstridge and Ice Cube -- don't exactly energize the proceed...

  • 30

The New York Times A.O. Scott

Like a zombie picture directed by one of the undead.

  • 20

    Variety Robert Koehler

This deliberately pre-'90s slice of rock 'n' roll-tinged sci-fi horror, decorated with anything but the latest in special effects, seems particularly grungy and marginal.
