John Ford Goes to War chronicles the Tinseltown filmmaker during what is arguably his greatest artistic feat: his live documentation of morale, heroism, and loss during World War II. Directed by Tom Thurman and narrated by Kris Kirstofferson, the film illustrates the events which lead John Ford to leave his comfortable repose in Hollywood and enter the chaos at the frontlines. Ford, who is most notably known for films such as Stagecoach, The Grapes of Wrath, and How Green Was My Valley, captures men on the battlefield during their most intimate moments as they face the inevitability of death. John Ford Goes to War unveils a side of John Ford unknown to most - his ability to document the war using a hand held camera all while evading gunfire is most remarkable. This captivating documentary also includes commentary and interviews with other filmmakers such as Oliver Stone (South of the Border, W., Natural Born Killers) and Peter Bogdanovich (The Sopranos, Paper Moon, What's Up, Doc?, The Last Picture Show). John Ford Goes to War is a must see for all those interested in war, documentary film and John Ford.moreless
