Johnny Cash and Roscoe Holcombe: Rainbow Quest is a standout episode of the musical television series hosted by Pete Seeger. Taken from a lyric to Seeger's own song "Oh, Had I A Golden Thread," this particular episode features three of folk music's greatest artists. Johnny Cash and wife June Carter Cash sing several early country ballads, while discussing Johnny's many musical influences. Next up is guitar and banjo virtuoso Roscoe Holcomb from the Appalachian Mountains of Kentucky. Playing a rare blend of bluegrass, Holcomb also sings in his trademark falsetto, taken straight from vocal traditions of the Deep South. Seeger goes the extra mile here as well, bringing in Scottish folk singer Jean Redpath, who helps to explain the close relationship between the Scotch-Irish immigrant Kentucky area with the old country. Recorded during one of the heights of folk music popularity, Johnny Cash alone makes this worth viewing, but the addition of June Carter Cash and Roscoe Holcomb make this a treat for any music lover.moreless
