Johnny Got His Gun is a powerful antiwar film based on the novel by Dalton Trumbo. Joe Bonham (Timothy Bottoms) was hit by an artillery shell the last day of World War I leaving him a quadruple amputee. He also lost his eyes, ears, mouth and nose. Conscious, he remains unable to connect with the world around him. He drifts between awakening and a dream world where he recalls his life before the war and the girl he loved. He struggles to communicate, begging the doctors in the military hospital to either finish the job the mortar failed to complete or send him on a tour of the country in a glass cage as a warning of the horrors of war. He manages to make his wishes known by using his head to spell out words using morse code, but his wishes go unanswered. The 1971 film received the Grand Prix Sp''cial du Jury prize at the Cannes Film Festival.
